Story Synopsis & Historical Significance
This graphic novel is famous for introducing Jean-Paul Valley, who is shocked to discover that his ancestors belong to an ancient, fanatical religious sect known as the Sacred Order of Saint Dumas [INDEX]. Through hypnotic subconscious brainwashing known as "The System," Jean-Paul is forcibly transformed into the Order's high-tech avenging executioner: Azrael [INDEX].
When Azrael goes on a bloody assassination mission against rogue elements of his order, Batman steps in to intercept him [INDEX]. The narrative follows their philosophical clash over justice and mortality across Gotham City and Europe [INDEX].
Historically, this book serves as the official prelude to the legendary Knightfall saga. Bruce Wayne recognizes Jean-Paul's potential and attempts to re-train him—a decision that directly allows Jean-Paul Valley to take over the mantle of Batman after Bane breaks Bruce Wayne's back later that year.
